Old Meets zu – zu.com expands into piece of local history
Nov 21, 2007
Faced with shortage of space and a need to grow to hold more staff, zu.com began looking for new office space in Saskatoon about a year ago. Space in the 15,000-20,000 square feet range left them with few alternatives. So when the availability of the former a&b sound building (in Saskatoon’s downtown warehouse district) was confirmed, zu.com owners decided to make an offer and ended up the proud owners of the 1929-built Pacific Avenue building.
President Tony Zuck says, “This decision was based on our need for space, our growth trends, and our ability to scale the company up in a measured way, and this seems to be the best route to encourage healthy, sustainable growth”. The warehouse embodies the perfect style of old-meets-new that stokes the interactive media crowd.
“This place will be an important ‘Why work for zu?’ element, and so becomes an advantage in attracting the best talent,” says CEO Ryan Lejbak. “The staff is excited because there is a bigger parking lot, which makes for a better game of shinny.”
Now the challenge switches to execution, “Our goal is to maintain the historical aspects of the building while using sustainable technologies such as solar energy to reduce our environmental footprint,” said Lejbak.
zu.com plans to officially open it’s doors to the new building in late spring/early summer 2008.
